What to expect

The first three months are largely feeding, sleep (or the lack of it), and working out what your specific baby actually needs versus what the internet says every baby needs. A lot of newborn gear gets used constantly; a surprising amount gets used once or twice and then sits in a cupboard.

Why get this sorted now

A reliable way to feed (bottles or a good pump if you're expressing), a safe sleep setup, and a handful of well-fitting sleepsuits get used every single day — they're worth spending a bit more to get right. Everything else can reasonably wait until you know your baby's actual habits.

What to buy first

1. A safe sleep setup — a firm, fitted-sheet-only crib or Moses basket, sorted before you come home.
2. Feeding bottles (and a steriliser) even if you plan to breastfeed, as a backup.
3. A small starter set of sleepsuits and muslins — you can always buy more once you know the sizing.
