Start-rite's Baby Bubble sits at the barefoot end of the brand's range — soft, flexible leather with a thin, non-restrictive sole, designed for the cruising-to-early-walking phase rather than confident outdoor walking. It's built around the same UK-fitting heritage as Clarks but leans further into flexible, minimal-structure design.

Against Clarks' more structured first walking shoes, the trade-off is durability versus foot freedom: the soft sole flexes more naturally underfoot (which many podiatrists favour for early walkers) but won't hold up to the same rough outdoor wear over time.

It's best suited to the earliest stage of walking — indoors, on smooth floors, or very short outdoor stints — with a firmer-soled shoe like the Clarks option above being the natural next step once a toddler is confidently walking outdoors.

What we liked

  • Very flexible sole supports natural foot movement for early walkers
  • Soft leather is comfortable for a foot not yet used to shoes
  • UK-brand fitting expertise, similar heritage to Clarks

Where it falls short

  • Soft sole wears faster with regular outdoor use than a firmer shoe
  • Better suited to indoor/early walking than confident outdoor walking
