The Haakaa is not really a pump in the mechanical sense — it's a single piece of food-grade silicone that you suction onto the breast you're not actively feeding from, and it catches milk let down naturally during that feed through gentle suction alone. There's no motor, no valve to clean, and nothing to charge, which makes it the simplest and cheapest way to collect milk that would otherwise be lost into a breast pad.

Against the Medela Swing Flex and Elvie in this category, the Haakaa is not a substitute for full expressing sessions — it only collects passive letdown during a feed, not milk actively drawn from a full breast on demand. What it does extremely well is low-effort, low-cost milk collection for parents who want to build a small freezer stash without adding a separate pumping session to their day.

Most parents who own an electric pump for proper expressing sessions still keep a Haakaa alongside it specifically for this passive-collection use case — it's cheap enough that the two aren't really in competition, they solve different problems.

What we liked

  • Extremely cheap and simple, one piece with nothing to clean apart
  • No power needed, works anywhere
  • Genuinely reduces wasted milk with almost no extra effort

Where it falls short

  • Doesn't replace a proper expressing session on a full breast
  • Suction can feel too strong for some without practice
  • Collection volume depends entirely on natural letdown
