The most important line to draw in this category is where a gate is safe to use — pressure-fit gates are not recommended at the top of stairs, and only one of the six here is designed for exactly that job. BabyDan's Guard Me (£44.99, our highest-scored gate) is a screw-fit, wall-mounted gate built specifically for the top of stairs and other high-risk spots, auto-closing and auto-locking so it can't be left open by mistake — the trade-off is drilling into the wall, which isn't ideal in a rental.
Everything else here is pressure-fit, suited to doorways, hallways and mid-level stairs rather than the top step. Dreambaby's Chelsea Xtra-Tall & Wide (£49.99, the priciest) and Regalo's Easy Step Extra Tall (£44.99) both stand noticeably taller than standard gates — around 91–96cm versus the usual 73–80cm — aimed at older, more determined climbers, though only the Dreambaby auto-closes; the Regalo needs shutting by hand every time but includes a wide-opening extension kit as standard.
At the more basic end, Lindam's Sure Shut Orto (£46.90) adds a genuinely one-handed opening mechanism, useful while carrying a baby, and Safety 1st's pressure-fit gate (£44.99) is a straightforward sturdy metal gate at the lowest price point without extra height or auto-close. Hauck's Squeeze Handle gate (£29.99, the cheapest overall) uses a two-handed squeeze mechanism that's hard for a toddler to defeat, but like the Regalo and Safety 1st, it has to be shut manually every time.

The verdict
If you need a gate for the top of the stairs, BabyDan's Guard Me is the only one here designed and recommended for that spot — don't substitute a pressure-fit gate there even if it's cheaper. For doorways and mid-level stairs, Lindam's Sure Shut Orto is worth the small premium for genuinely one-handed opening, and Dreambaby's Chelsea or Regalo's Easy Step are the better choices once your toddler is tall enough to challenge a standard-height gate — Dreambaby if you want auto-close built in, Regalo if the wide extension kit matters more. On a tight budget, Hauck's Squeeze Handle or Safety 1st's pressure-fit gate both do the basic job reliably, with Hauck the cheaper of the two.
