The clearest split in infant car seats is between fixed, lightweight carriers and the rotating, lie-flat seats built for babies who spend real time in the car. Maxi-Cosi's CabrioFix (£175) sits at the practical end: 3.2kg, fixed semi-upright shell, compatible with the widest range of ISOFIX bases and travel systems of anything here — which is also why it carries our highest score. Joie's i-Snug 2 (£104.95) goes further on price alone, installing with just a seatbelt so you're not tied to buying a base at all, at the cost of a fiddlier belt fit each time.

At the other end, Cybex's Cloud T (£349.95) and Nuna's Pipa Urbn (£330) both add features aimed at comfort and stability rather than raw portability. The Cloud T is the only seat here with a 360-degree rotating base and a genuine lie-flat recline, useful for longer journeys or a smaller car boot where twisting to load a rear-facing seat is awkward; the Pipa Urbn skips rotation but adds a load-leg base for extra crash stability and a magnetic one-handed buckle. Both are close to double the CabrioFix's price and noticeably heavier to carry (6.1kg and 4.0kg against 3.2kg).

Two more sit in between. Silver Cross's Dream (£200) offers a multi-position recline and clicks directly onto Silver Cross's own pushchair range, useful if you're already buying into that system. BeSafe's iZi Go Modular X1 (£220) takes a different approach entirely — it's designed to convert into a rearward-facing toddler seat on the same base as your child grows, spreading the base's cost over a longer period rather than being a single-stage newborn carrier.

The verdict

For most parents, the Maxi-Cosi CabrioFix is the sensible default — light, well-priced, and compatible with more bases and pushchairs than anything else here. If budget is the priority and you don't mind a seatbelt fit, the Joie i-Snug 2 does the same certified safety job for nearly £70 less. Spend more only if you have a specific reason to: the Cybex Cloud T if you want rotation and lie-flat recline for a lot of car time, the Nuna Pipa Urbn if load-leg stability and a magnetic buckle matter more to you than rotating, and the BeSafe iZi Go Modular X1 if you'd rather buy one base and grow with it into toddlerhood.
