SHEIN Sensory Blocks & YongnKids Sandbox Recall: Asbestos
On 1 October 2026 OPSS published recalls for the SHEIN Children's Wooden Acrylic Rainbow Sensory Blocks and the YongnKids Theme Scene Sandbox Toy Kit sold via Amazon, as the sand may contain asbestos. Here's how to check your toy, bag it and clean up safely, and claim a refund.

Two more children's toys have been recalled in the UK because the sand inside them may be contaminated with asbestos: the SHEIN Children's Wooden Acrylic Rainbow Sensory Blocks and the YongnKids Theme Scene Sandbox Toy Kit sold via Amazon. Both recalls were published by the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) on 1 October 2026. If you have either toy, stop using it now, don't sweep or hoover any spilled sand, and follow the steps below.
What the recall notices say
According to the OPSS, the sand in both products may contain a small quantity of asbestos, which is a banned substance because it poses a risk to health even at low levels of exposure. The OPSS says the products do not meet the requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011. Both listings have been taken down.
How to check if you have an affected toy
| Product | Sold via | Identifier | What the seller says |
|---|---|---|---|
| Children's Wooden Acrylic Rainbow Sensory Blocks, Geometric Shape Puzzle Blocks | SHEIN | Product number sk26062823339701832428 | Refund to the original payment method; the toy does not need to be returned. Contact ukcsteam@shein.com |
| YongnKids Theme Scene Sandbox Toy Kit | Amazon | ASIN BODPQ5M3P3; Amazon barcode X0026TZ9ZR | Listing removed by Amazon; stop using it |
The SHEIN toy is a set of wooden and acrylic sand-filled blocks, so the sand is sealed inside the toy rather than being loose play sand. The YongnKids product is a sandbox-style play kit. Check your order history for the product name or number, because the listing titles are long and easy to miss.
What to do if you have one
These steps follow the OPSS notices and its guidance on asbestos in consumer products:
- Stop using the toy immediately and keep children away from it.
- If the sand is still sealed in its packaging or inside the toy, place it in a heavy-duty plastic bag, double-tape it securely, label it clearly and keep it somewhere secure, out of reach of children.
- If the sand has spilled or been played with, clean the affected areas with wet cloths rather than a brush or vacuum, so you don't lift dust. Wear gloves and a mask, and double-bag the sand, cloths, gloves and mask.
- Ask for your refund. For the SHEIN blocks, contact SHEIN customer service; you don't need to send the toy back. For the YongnKids kit, contact Amazon about the purchase.
- If you can't return it, contact your local authority for advice on disposing of asbestos safely where you live.
The reason for wet cleaning is that the risk comes from fibres getting into the air and being breathed in. Dry sweeping or vacuuming is the opposite of what you want.
If your child has already played with it
We can't assess your child's individual risk, so here is what the official sources say. The NHS explains that asbestos-related illnesses such as asbestosis are caused by breathing in asbestos fibres and typically take many years to develop after exposure, so you wouldn't expect to see symptoms now. If you're worried, speak to your GP or call NHS 111 and tell them what your child was exposed to and roughly when.
Part of a much bigger pattern
These aren't isolated cases. Which? reported in June 2026 that it had tested nine sand kits and found tremolite asbestos in two of them, and said dozens of asbestos-contaminated sand products had been recalled since November 2025. We've already covered the HTI Sand Art Bottle Kit recall and the Smyths cornhole bean bags recall. The common thread is cheap sand-filled toys, often sold through online marketplaces.
Staying ahead of the next recall
- Search the OPSS product safety alerts, reports and recalls page by product name before you buy any sand-based toy, and again before passing one on.
- Be extra careful with marketplace sellers. Our guide to toy safety standards explains what UKCA and CE marks do and don't tell you.
- Check second-hand toys against recall lists too; see our guide to buying second-hand baby gear safely.
- Keep order confirmations so you can match a product number to a recall quickly.
The bottom line
If you bought the SHEIN rainbow sensory blocks (sk26062823339701832428) or the YongnKids sandbox kit (ASIN BODPQ5M3P3), stop using them, bag them or wipe up spills with wet cloths, and claim your refund. If your child has played with them and you're concerned, talk to your GP or NHS 111.
